Key achievements of the Centre include:
  • Making several key advances in HIV and HCV adaptation to host immune responses, immunogenetics of drug hypersensitivity reactions, and causes of antiretroviral drug-associated fat wasting and other metabolic toxicities leading to publications in prestigious high impact journals including Science, The Lancet, Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences, Nature, and Nature Immunology. This seminal work created a new field of host-pathogen population genetics underpinning a much more strategic and efficient approach to research of disease. The principles defined have important implications for cancer research and other areas of life science concerned with co-evolution of genomes such as the environmental sciences, agriculture and veterinary medicine;
  • Generating the largest repository of data on HIV and host genetic diversity at a population level (larger than all other datasets worldwide, combined) and hence becoming the recognised world leader in high throughput host and pathogen genomics;
  • Attracting in excess of $20 million of direct, highly competitive public and private sector research funds into the state, less than 1% of which is from the State Government and the remaining 99% being from federal and international sources;
  • Developing over 30 collaborations with leading national and international research groups, including Microsoft Research on HIV vaccine design and eight commercial and public sector vaccine development programs;
  • Forging strong relationships with industry partners.
  • Innovation of novel analytical approaches with commercial potential. Two patents are currently in the national phase internationally, diagnostic kits are being produced for pharmacogenomics, and the Centre's vaccine work also has strong potential for downstream commercialisation.
